5 Things You Can Do To Help Seniors Around You

Reaching out to isolated older adults is essential during the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak– here are some specific things you can do that can go a long way.
1. Social Support: Check in with older adult neighbors. Send a text or email, call them, or leave a note on their front door – whatever works the best, just remember to keep the social distancing rules and avoid physical contact.
2. Help with food and essentials – Older adults are at higher risk and shouldn’t be out and about, so why not offer your help for a grocery store run?
3. Help with medications – Again, you could make the trip to the pharmacy yourself, or set up ongoing delivery. The latter might require a three-way call to the drug store, and maybe a follow-up call to their health insurance.
4. Connect with trusted organizations – Remote-volunteer for local organizations serving older adults. Some senior centers and organizations are providing meals for seniors, and most of those are providing home delivery during the COVID-19 crisis. You can offer your help in many different ways.
5. Don’t forget your dementia care caregivers – If you know someone caring for an older person with dementia, reach out to them. Times like this can be a handful, sometimes people just need to talk or they might need your help with one of the items above.
Remember, together we are stronger! Together we will get through this!
