Support for the Primary Caregiver

One can love another person profoundly and still be completely drained of energy! Family caregivers are only human beings. And when they give constantly, something begins to erode…

They have a need for respite care when they are constantly feeling tired, when small things seem like big mountains, when they lose touch with their friends, and when they forget about themselves completely.

Respite care is not running away from one's obligations. It is staying true to oneself.

Family vacation or travel

You can love them so much and still find that you need to take a break. When a family caregiver is exhausted, feels obligated every day, and cannot recall their last carefree rest, then a break is necessary. Respite care does not abandon your loved one. It's about making room to relax and return refreshed and ready for the challenge ahead.

Need for personal time

Even without a crisis, caregivers need time for themselves wether its for appointments, social time, or simply a mental rest. Respite care makes that possible without guilt.

After a hospital stay

They've always looked out for each other. However, after surgery, that changes; it's no longer something the spouse can handle alone. No matter how much they love their significant other, there's only so much any one person can do, especially when they must care for themselves, too. That's where temporary caregiving comes in, not to take their place in the relationship, but to help it along. Thus, the sick individual receives the necessary care and the caregiver feels better because they know they aren't responsible for everything on their own.

Caregiver burnout or exhaustion

Caregiver burnout or exhaustion can happen when someone takes care of another person for a long time. This work can be tough on both the body and emotions. Respite care allows caregivers to rest, recharge, and prevent burnout.

Getting Started Is Simple

A Clear, Guided Process from Initial Call to Caregiver Match

  1. Reach out by phone or by filling out our online form, and THREE things come back to you. A FREE foundational Plan of Care tailored to you and your loved one, along with potential caregiver(s) profile(s) near you, and a list of questions to ask home care agencies.

  2. Our goal is to create the most effective Plan of Care for your loved one. One of our Client Managers will reach out to schedule an in-home visit. This allows us to get to know you and your loved one personally, understand their needs, and assess the home for safety. We'll note any existing adaptive equipment and flag any adjustments that could better support their independence at home.

  3. Based on everything we have learned about your loved one, we will send you a couple of pre-selected caregiver profiles that we believe are a good match for your loved one's needs, preferences, hobbies, personality, etc. Once you have chosen a caregiver you feel good about, you have the option to meet them before services begin.

  4. On the first day of services, our Field Supervisor will be on-site to ensure the Plan of Care is fully understood and followed. Clients are encouraged to ask questions, and we will be there to ease the transition every step of the way. From there, our Field Supervisor will continue with monthly in-home visits to ensure quality care is maintained.

Common Questions

Questions Families Ask About Respite Care

How quickly can we arrange respite care?

While more notice always helps us find the best caregiver match, we often arrange respite support within 24 to 48 hours for urgent situations. For planned breaks — a vacation, a procedure, a regular weekly day off — contacting us early ensures an even better fit. Call us at (860) 829-0208 for time-sensitive needs.

Can respite care be recurring on a regular schedule?

Absolutely. Many families schedule a recurring 'relief day' once or twice a week to maintain a healthy caregiving balance long-term. Regular scheduled respite helps prevent caregiver burnout before it becomes a crisis. We can set up a consistent weekly or bi-weekly arrangement that works around your routine.

Will my loved one feel comfortable with someone new?

This is one of the most common concerns we hear. Our coordinators specialize in matching caregivers who have the experience and the right personality suited to short-term transitions. We also arrange a brief introduction before the first day so your loved one is not surprised by a new face. Most clients adapt quickly when the match is made thoughtfully.

What does respite care typically include?

Respite care covers whatever your loved one needs while you are away. This can include companionship and conversation, meal preparation, medication reminders, light housekeeping, personal care assistance, and safety supervision. The scope is tailored during your free consultation based on your loved one's daily routine.

Is respite care covered by insurance?

Standard health insurance typically does not cover non-medical respite care. However, many long-term care insurance (LTCI) policies do include respite benefits. Connecticut's Community First Choice program may also provide options for eligible families. We are happy to help you review your coverage during a free consultation.

What is the difference between respite care and regular hourly home care?

Respite care is specifically designed as temporary relief for a family member who is the primary caregiver. Regular hourly or live-in home care is an ongoing arrangement where a professional is the primary caregiver. In practice, the services provided are similar — the difference is the purpose and duration. Many families start with respite care and transition to regular care as needs evolve.
